In the UK over 200 people present to Accident and Emergency every year with Sunburn. This is a very preventable condition and protecting yourself from the sun will reduce the risk of Skin Cancer.
One of the most successful campaigns in Australia's history was SLIP SLAP SLOP: Slip on a shirt, Slap on a hat and slop on sun cream. This has led a fall in melanoma by 5% a year since the 90s.
How can you avoid or treat sunburn:
1. Get out of the sun if you start feeling tingly on your skin. Sunburn will start to develop in the next few hours so if you are feeling tingly is has already started.
2. Bathe in cold water
3. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!
4. If your skin becomes very inflammed, 1% hydrocortisone cream can help reduce the pain and burning.
5. Anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen can be helpful.
