What is health surveillance?
Health surveillance is an ongoing, repeated health assessment scheme to risk assess and detect any areas of potential health hazards to your employees, and specifically to identify ill health caused by work.
Health risks which require health surveillance include environments where there are sustained and increased levels of:
- Noise
- Vibration
- COSHH (substances hazardous to health such as dust, fumes, solvents and more.)
The law requires that health surveillance also includes special medical checks for certain hazards such as asbestos, lead, and ionising radiation.
Why do you need it?
As an employer, you must protect your workers from getting hurt or ill through work.
Health surveillance is a legal requirement in specific circumstances when there is a risk to your employees’ health, despite any control measures and practices you may have put in place.
If you don’t comply to the regulations or fail to detect areas of health concern, you run the risk of committing a criminal offence and could be prosecuted.
Putting your mind at ease and keeping your employees healthy
The Doctors Clinic Group, via our Occupational Health specialists Maitland Medical, can help you with onsite health surveillance assessments. This will put your mind at ease as we will advise you, as the employer, on work-related health risk factors and your employees who are at risk. Following the health surveillance, you will receive a detailed report with helpful advice to make the necessary improvements and adjustments.
What happens on the day?
Health surveillance assessments only need to be undertaken for employees who are working in higher risk environments. Relevant employees will complete a health questionnaire prior to the appointment. This will ensure that all necessary information is gathered to differentiate between work-related factors from other health issues.
On the day of the assessment, a trained occupational health professional will conduct tests with those employees individually, which allows each employee to ask any questions or raise concerns they may have.
Following the health surveillance, you will receive a detailed report with helpful advice on how to make the necessary improvements and adjustments. Your employees will receive a personalised report with more information on their health, and some might be referred to a GP or an occupational physician for potential work-related factors, if needed.
