Dr Jay Bowden BMedSci BMBS MRCGP DFSRH DRCOG PGCert qualified from the University of Nottingham in 2004 and moved to London in 2005. Before settling in to general practice he worked in a variety of hospital specialities including cardiology, stroke medicine, sexual health, urology, psychiatry, obstetrics, gynaecology, emergency medicine and paediatrics.
Since qualifying as a general practitioner his experience has been equally broad, having worked in Primrose Hill, Bermondsey & Rotherhithe and he even spent some time at Pentonville prison (though not at Her Majesty’s pleasure!). He believes in disease prevention and a holistic approach to optimising physical and mental health. He ensures he is up to date with the full spectrum of general practice, but particular interests include sexual health, men’s health, mental health and dermatology.
His other professional interests include medical education and ethics. He has taught at both university and postgraduate level and has developed innovative training programmes in child health and mental health for GP trainees, paediatricians and psychiatrists in London. He has also written a national online education programme, which aims to improve the physical healthcare provided to patients with severe mental illness. He strongly believes in the empowerment of patients in the management of their health and is due to publish some work on patient autonomy in the near future.
Outside of medicine, he has a variety of interests including mountaineering, rock climbing, arts and dance.
