How to make the most of your GP appointment

Make the most of your GP appointment

Having 15 minutes with a GP can feel like no time at all, but don’t worry – it’s absolutely possible to have an in depth conversation with the GP in this time and help put your mind at rest about any worries you may be having.

We want to make sure you get the most possible out of you GP appointment so here are our top tips for how to do just that…

  1. Be prepared

Make sure you know what it is you want to talk about and be ready for some of the questions the GP might ask. Try and practice what it is you want to say and have it in your head or written down. The less time you spend trying to explain your ailment the more time you will have to talk about a plan going forwards. It’s also good to have questions prepared for the GP – what is it you want to know from them?

  1. Be detailed

Try and tell the doctor as much as possible about your symptoms. When did they start? Have they improved or worsened overtime? Is there a particular time that they are more severe? If you want to take notes with you or refer to your calendar or diary that is completely fine! The more accurate detail you can provide the better.

  1. Be honest

We know that going to the doctor can sometimes be embarrassing if it’s something you don’t like talking about. But not telling the whole truth or being vague will limit the care the GP can give you. It’s normal to be embarrassed but trust us, they’ve seen and heard it all before and they want to help. By giving them all the information possible they can provide the best possible care.

  1. Be realistic

Think about what it is you’re hoping to get out of your appointment and is 15 minutes realistic? You can book appointments up to 60 minutes long at Doctors Clinic Group. While most concerns can be addressed in 15 minutes, we understand the need to sometimes have extended time with the GP to discuss more in depth lifestyle assessments.

Skip the waits with same day private GP appointments available online or in clinic.
