Contraceptive implant

Coming soon

The contraceptive implant is a highly effective and discreet form of contraception. It can be administered during a short procedure and starts preventing pregnancy after a week. The implant releases a small dose of progesterone this helps with eliminating the risk of pregnancy if you were on an oral pill .

What is the contraceptive implant?

The implant currently available in the UK is Nexplanon. It is a small, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It is a long-acting, reversible contraceptive method that releases a steady, low dose of Progesterone hormone to prevent pregnancy.

How does the contraceptive implant work?

Within the contraceptive implant, the progestogen hormone, known as etonogestrel, is gradually and consistently released into the bloodstream.

Its primary mechanism involves inhibiting the release of eggs from the ovaries. Simultaneously, it thickens the cervical mucus, forming a barrier in the cervix that prevents sperm from reaching the womb (uterus) and fertilising an egg.

It also contributes to thinning the lining of the womb. This crucial alteration reduces the likelihood of a fertilized egg successfully attaching to the womb during implantation.

It’s important to understand that successful pregnancy relies on the orchestration of multiple factors: ovulation, sperm passage through the cervix, and implantation. The contraceptive implant effectively intervenes in all three stages, acting as a comprehensive barrier to pregnancy.

How long does the contraceptive implant last?

One of the standout features of the contraceptive implant is its long-lasting effectiveness. Once inserted, it provides protection against pregnancy for up to three years. This means that you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with reliable contraception without the need for daily or monthly maintenance.

Why get the contraceptive implant over other forms of contraception?

There are many benefits to the contraceptive implant including:

  • Highly effective: The contraceptive implant is more than 99% effective, making it one of the most reliable forms of contraception available.
  • Convenience: With no daily pills to remember or monthly appointments, the implant offers a hassle-free contraceptive solution.
  • Reversibility: Despite its long-term effectiveness, the contraceptive implant is easily reversible. Fertility typically returns shortly after removal.
  • Discreetness: Once inserted, the implant is virtually invisible, providing a discreet method of contraception without affecting daily activities.

How is the contraceptive implant inserted?

The insertion procedure is a quick and relatively simple process performed by a healthcare professional.

  1. Consultation: Schedule a consultation with your healthcare provider to discuss your medical history, any concerns, and to ensure the contraceptive implant is the right choice for you.
  2. Placement: The implant is inserted just under the skin on the inner side of the upper arm. A local anesthetic is used to minimise discomfort.
  3. Recovery: Following the insertion, you may experience some bruising or swelling, but this typically subsides within a few days.
  4. Aftercare: Your healthcare provider will provide instructions on caring for the insertion site and when to return for removal or if you experience any issues.

You will not be able to receive the contraceptive implant if you are:

  • Have ever had breast or endometrial cancer
